The carotid artery stenting (CAS) is a modern minimally invasive method of treating of chronic cerebral ischemia. The main treatment objectives are to reduce symptoms of ischemia and to prevent debilitating complications in the future (stroke, acute cerebrovascular accidents).
The carotid artery stenting (CAS) is an alternative to open surgical interventions with plaque removal through an incision in the vessel wall – carotid endarterectomy (CEE).
The essence of the procedure:
The operation is performed using a puncture (endovascular) method without a surgical incision. The patency of the vessel is restored by implanting a stent into the affected area and creating a strong frame inside the vessel. During stent implantation, a special microfilter is temporarily installed in the affected vessel to prevent plaque particles from flowing into the brain. This technology can significantly reduce the risk of stroke compared to open surgery - endarterectomy.
Indications for stenting:

Narrowing of the internal carotid artery more than 70% without clinical symptoms (previous strokes, transient ischemic attacks)

Narrowing of the internal carotid artery more than 50% with the presence of clinical symptoms
Contraindications:
- Severe renal failure
The operation of carotid artery stenting is performed under local anesthesia. It takes approximately 30 min. The puncture site after procedure is closed by a special device to enable the patient to go around in 6 hours. After the operation, the patient is under the supervision of doctors at the Scandinavian Health Center for 24 hours and is discharged the next day.
The cost of treatment may vary from 600 000 to 800 000 rubles.
